A contract for difference (CFD) is a derivative: two parties agree to exchange the difference in an instrument's price between the open and close of the position, without either party owning the underlying asset. A CFD liquidity provider is the firm that prices and executes those contracts on a broker's behalf. It publishes a continuous two-way quote for each CFD it covers — an index, a barrel of oil, a single share, a cryptocurrency — and stands ready to fill the broker's orders against that quote.
The defining feature is breadth. It is tempting to treat CFD liquidity as "FX liquidity with more symbols," but the mechanics differ in an important way. In foreign exchange, the provider quotes an actual, tradable currency market — the price it streams is a price at which currency genuinely changes hands upstream. A CFD price, by contrast, is derived. The provider takes a reference price from the underlying market — a futures contract, a cash index, an exchange-listed share, a spot crypto venue — and constructs a CFD quote around it.
That distinction has practical consequences. - Hedging capacity. Can the provider absorb real hedging flow in each class, and how does it behave under stress?
- Connectivity and reporting. How is the feed delivered — FIX, bridge — and is reporting consolidated across all asset classes?
